A Century of R&D article

In 2008, Corning celebrates 100 years of research and development. Corning is one of only five U.S.-based, industrial R&D companies to achieve this significant milestone.

By the early 1900s, Corning had established itself as a leader in unlocking the mysteries of glass. But in 1908, the company saw the power in bringing Corning’s independent researchers together to share ideas and collaborate and therefore developed a formal research lab. Led by Dr. Eugene Sullivan, the formal R&D organization accelerated the company’s rate of innovation and helped strengthen its growing legacy as a technology pioneer.

Corning continues to succeed through a sustained investment in R&D; more than 160 years of material science and process engineering knowledge, consistently delivering new innovations that change the world.
